At Human Powered Submarine,
we engineer the unconventional.

About Us

The Human-Powered Submarine (HPS) team at UC San Diego is a student-led engineering organization that designs, builds, and races a fully flooded, human-powered submarine at the International Submarine Races.

We believe unique problems require unique solutions and that the best ones are formed by diverse teams. HPS welcomes students of all majors and experience levels to learn and take on challenges in hydrodynamics, machining, composite manufacturing, electronics, project management, and more.

Above all, HPS is a place to learn, experiment, and grow alongside a team of passionate thinkers.

The Competition

The International Submarine Races (ISR) is a biennial design competition sponsored by the Foundation for Underwater Research & Education every two years at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in Bethesda, MD.

Teams compete in various categories including non-propeller, propeller, one-person, and two-person submarines, with awards for fastest speed on a straight 100m course (overall and by category), best design outline, most efficient staging, and best spirit.
